One of our focuses at Holy Ascension is education and growth in our relationship with Christ and the historic Orthodox faith. We welcome and encourage anyone interested in learning about Orthodoxy to join our various classes.
Each Sunday following Divine Liturgy, we have Sunday school for our children from preschool through to High School. We follow the recommended curriculum helping our children grow in the Orthodox faith, traditions, and services and helping to increase their knowledge and relationship with God.
If you would like to see the curriculum used, feel free to browse the Christian Education section of the Antiochian Archdiocese.
We also have a Youth Choir. Prior to Sunday school, rehearsals with the Sunday school students are held where we will learn the hymns of the Church and as well as various traditions and lessons. Please join us!
Catechumen and Inquirer’s Classes
For several weeks each season, we hold a variety of classes for inquirers and catechumens of the Orthodox Church. Various topics are taught by Fr. Daniel Meyer including the meaning and format of Orthodox services, doctrine, history and the holy fathers. Previous topics have included lessons on the format and meaning of our Liturgical services of Vespers, Orthros (or Matins) and the Divine Liturgy. Our most recent class utilized a DVD series entitled, “Finding the Church Jesus Built”. These classes are open to those interested in learning about Orthodoxy whether catechumen, inquirer or Orthodox.
Spiritual Growth Group and Adult Sunday school
Periodically during the year, we will meet for several weeks to discuss a book from one of the Church Fathers, book of Scripture or a topic for growth in our faith. In the past, we have read the Ladder of Divine Ascent by St. John Climacus, learned the place of Fasting in our lives and in the Church as well as our upcoming class on Ecclesiastes. These classes are open to all adults.
